Burrrrrrrr! That pretty much sums up recent weather in the Traverse City area. Our average October temperature was 44 degrees, almost 7 degrees below normal! When you consider that last spring, warm weather did not really arrive until June � well - you get the picture! I now have more pairs of long underwear than children. Speaking of children, all Traverse City area public schools were closed for a week as the H1N1 flu made it�s way through our community. The kids were excited, the parents...... not so much.

At my house, we are raking leaves, putting away yard furniture and setting up our backyard hockey rink. The change of seasons always brings the family together as everyone helps with the chores at hand.

What happened to summer in Northern Michigan this year? That is the question being bantered about by both locals and tourists with chattering teeth. Looking at the weather records for the past three months, it appears summer visited the week of June 21st, when we had two days in the 90's (the only two days this summer). Couple that with sunshine fewer than 50% of those days, and you understand why everyone is in a funk. The mean temperature for June, July and August was a balmy 63.3 degrees. With the last holiday weekend of the summer approaching, my family will be heading to Michigan�s Upper Peninsula again this year. Fortunately, this growing season is shaping up to be one of the best ever for North American fruits! Michigan is seeing the largest tart cherry crop in many years. Here in northern Michigan, the weather changes daily. A cool spring was followed by several days in the 90’s, then just as suddenly, we are back in the 60’s, with much needed rain. I always hear people complaining that the local weather forecasters can’t get it right. With all of the Great Lakes surrounding our state and an active jet stream, I think this must be one of the hardest areas for weather forecasting.

This year the tart cherry harvest is expected to produce larger than normal volumes. Our below average spring temperatures, while cold, did not create the killing frosts of the past few years.
