Here in hockey country, we sure enjoyed the excitement that this year�s USA team brought to the Olympics! My brother was at the game in Vancouver and said that when the US team scored in the final minute of regulation, it was as if a bomb had exploded � the Canadian fans couldn�t believe their eyes. I hope this newsletter finds you in good health and spirits. As arctic air, high winds and frequent snowfalls continue to pound Michigan, I keep focusing on the thought that Spring is only 7 weeks away. A good classical or jazz album also creates an uplifting feeling on a cloudy day and allows the mind to drift to warmer climates!

In my house, the key to a productive day starts with a healthy breakfast. A few months ago, I stumbled upon a line of all natural granola and felt I must offer it to my customers. Not the kind sweetened with corn syrup or white sugar, but one with honey and brown sugar. This is the old fashioned free flow granola, perfect as an ingredient or as a stand alone product. There are endless ways to prepare these granolas. I often start with unsweetened organic yogurt, add a couple tablespoons of juice concentrate, mix in granola and top with fresh bananas or wild blueberries or dried cherries. I even keep a bag on my desk at work and pour a handful for a mid morning or afternoon snack. With seven flavors to choose from, I have yet to develop a favorite. At my house, we are raking leaves, putting away yard furniture and setting up our backyard hockey rink. The change of seasons always brings the family together as everyone helps with the chores at hand.

What happened to summer in Northern Michigan this year? That is the question being bantered about by both locals and tourists with chattering teeth. Looking at the weather records for the past three months, it appears summer visited the week of June 21st, when we had two days in the 90's (the only two days this summer). With the last holiday weekend of the summer approaching, my family will be heading to Michigan�s Upper Peninsula again this year. Here at Brownwood Acres, we recognize the need for our own stimulus package, one that will leave more of your hard earned money in your checkbook, while allowing you to continue with your fruit regimen.

Fortunately, this growing season is shaping up to be one of the best ever for North American fruits! Michigan is seeing the largest tart cherry crop in many years. Wild blueberries and several other fruits will also be plentiful. What this means to you, the consumer, is better pricing on fruit juice concentrates.

I am optimistic that we can hold these prices until the next growing season. My goal has always been to provide the best product at the best price, and pass any savings along to the consumer.

Here in northern Michigan, the weather changes daily. A cool spring was followed by several days in the 90’s, then just as suddenly, we are back in the 60’s, with much needed rain. I always hear people complaining that the local weather forecasters can’t get it right. With all of the Great Lakes surrounding our state and an active jet stream, I think this must be one of the hardest areas for weather forecasting.

This year the tart cherry harvest is expected to produce larger than normal volumes. Our below average spring temperatures, while cold, did not create the killing frosts of the past few years. Since the federal government regulates the tart cherry industry, only a portion of the crop will be available for sale, but any saving we can negotiate will be reflected in our pricing.
